Pheasants

Pavo cristetus

Indian Pea fowls are found throughout the Indian Union, locally up to 1800 m. in the Himalayas, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

These Pheasants are found in dense scrub and deciduous jungle – plains – preferably in the neighborhood of river and streams.

Indian Peafowl are always excessively shy and alert. They rest at night in large trees.

Male has blue neck and breast and spectacular glossy green of 1 to 1.5 m. long upper tail – Cover feathers with numerous ocelli. Female has Whitish face and throat and whit belly and lacks alongated tail covers.

They feed on grains, vegetable shoots, insets, lizards, snakes etc.

Female lays 3 to 5 eggs in litter.
